Facility Closure - Roof Repair

Repair of the roof is a huge project that will take 3-4 months to complete. Work is scheduled to take place May-September 2024. During most of this time the building must be vacant, and Glacier’s programming will be disrupted significantly. Many details are still unknown and Glacier is exploring a number of alternatives to try to keep some programs running.

History: October 2023 a deficiency with the Civic facility roof was discovered; ultimately reducing the maximum safe snow load of the building to 8 inches. This led to a number of building closures throughout the winter season. The City is committed to repairing the roof before the next snow season.

Financial Impact - $60,000.00 +

Summer programming may be a complete loss; and we have also been told to expect a delay to the start of Fall programming. A conservative estimate of the cost of a closure is approximately $60,000.00. Even with a total closure of the Club, cost saving measures fall well short of this amount as many expenses don’t stop.

Who we are

Glacier Gymnastics Club is a not-for-profit Society, run by a volunteer board of directors and managed by paid staff. The Sponsorship Program is administered by the staff. The Board remains active in seeking sponsors and building relationships with our community's businesses.

The Gymnastics Club was incorporated in February of 1995. The club moved to many different locations within Nelson until settling into its current location at the Civic Centre gymnasium in 2001.

We offer a full range of recreational programs, from Parent and Tot to Adult programs, all of which promote fun, fitness and fundamentals. Our competitive programs focus on the training and development of athletes who aspire to compete at local and provincial levels.

Annually we have 1000 participants in our gymnastics classes, and we are proud that our numbers reflect a very high percentage of young girls. Our membership is approximately 600 families annually.

It Takes a Community!

Not for profits, like Glacier Gymnastics Club rely on much more than the dedication of the few staff and parent volunteers to remain successful and vibrant. Our goal of Building Healthy Humans extends out to our entire community; where we wish to see everyone living their Healthiest Life Possible.

We seek to positively impact the lives of the children who participate in our programs, providing mentorship and guidance as they develop life skills through sport. We hope to improve all aspects of the community we exist within.
