Spring / Summer Closure

The City has notified tennents that a closure of possibly 5 months may be required to repair the roof. Currently it is unclear exactly when we will have to close, but it seems likely it will be before our scheduled end of season - July 12th.

As soon as we have details we will email all members directly and update our webpages.

The roof has accumulated 6" overnight and is being monitored closely.

Jan 23

January 23 - Noon

The Civic Center is Open

After the engineers inspection of the roof trusses, it was determined that the Civic Center is safe to reopen.

Tuesday classes and Glacier Fest will run as scheduled.

January 23 - 9:30 am

The City is delayed in their update today due to the need to have an Engineer complete an inspection of the roof trusses, and to verify that it is safe to reopen the Civic Centre.

We expect to get another update by 12:00 pm (noon) today.

 - we are cautiously optimistic that classes (and Glacier Fest) will resume today.

We will email all Recreational and Team families around 12 noon with confirmation either way.

January 22 - 9am

The warmer weather hasn't materialized. Snow accumulation remains over the threshold.

The building remains closed until otherwise notified.

Jan 19

January 19th 7:00pm

The evacuation will not be lifted for Saturday (tomorrow).

The warmer weather does not appear to be coming as early as hoped, and instead of rain, the Civic continues to accumulate more snow. The forecast is still showing warm weather is on the way, but its a guessing game to predict when, and the City is committed to letting us return once the snow melts below the threshold.

We continue to hope that classes will be running on Sunday.

However, parents should continue to check their emails before attending classes.

**  WE ARE WORKING ON OFFERING MAKE UP CLASSES FOR SATURDAY GROUPS (likely on Sunday).

Gymnastics Cancelled

  • Saturday, Jan 20th

To Be Determined

  • Sunday, Jan 21th

Planning to be Open

  • Monday, Jan 22

-----

January 19th

The City has communicated that rain may arrive by early Saturday morning, and there's a possibility the building may be re-opened before Sunday. They will update us by 5:00pm today.

If its possible, we hope to run Saturday classes (at least in the afternoon). We are also considering running some makeup classes on Sunday. This immediate return to class will be beneficial for all of the gymnasts who have Glacier Fest next week and who otherwise would have missed their last practice opportunities.

Parents, check your emails or details.

January 18th 1:30pm

Accumulation on the roof remains at the threshold. Accounting for the current weather forecast, it is likely the building will remain closed through Saturday, and assessed for opening on Sunday. This is completely weather dependant and can not be predicted.

Gymnastics Cancelled

  • Friday,  Jan 19th
  • S̶a̶t̶u̶r̶d̶a̶y̶, J̶a̶n̶ 2̶0̶t̶h̶. update

Planning to be Open

  • Monday, Jan 22

We will email families directly with plans for Sunday's schedule no later than Saturday evening (and sooner if we receive more information).

January 17th 12:15pm

As of 12noon the roof has 6" and the snow is forecast is for snow to continue. It is expected that the roof will exceed the 8" snow load safety margin, and as of 2:00pm the Civic Centre will be closed.

  • Gymnastics classes are cancelled for the remainder of Wednesday, Jan 17th.
  • Classes will also be cancelled for Thursday, Jan 18th.

The closure may extend into the weekend. Families with classes on Friday, Saturday & Sunday will receive a direct email by Thursday afternoon updating the status of the closure.

Parents should check their emails before attending classes.

Team Athletes: Training at alternative locations will ONLY be implemented if the closure continues for an extended period. You will receive more information if this needs to be organized.

January 16th 3:00pm

We have received a weather watch warning from the City.

The forecast is calling for up to 20cm or more starting the morning of Wed, Jan 17th. The potential for the facility to be closed exists. The situation will be monitored closely, and we expect a communication from the City no later than 12 noon on Wednesday.

Classes are still running until otherwise notified.

Classes for Wednesday, January 17th

  • Likely our morning class schedule will be unaffected.
  • Check your email for updates before attending afternoon classes.

Classes for Thursday, Friday, Saturday...

  • If a closure occurs it will likely effect the schedule until the end of the week when warmer weather is forecast.
  • We will email participants of these classes in advance.

We will use our text messaging system only if a closure occurs.

All other communication will continue to be by email, directly to effected families.

Gymnastics Closures - Snow Load Concerns

In October 2023 the City  learned of deficiencies with the Civic Center roof structure. Read the City's Notice here. The simplified explanation is that the Civic Centre was built to code with only about 1/2 the snow load limits that current building codes require. Recent engineer inspections have determined the roof has likely reached maximum snow loads during past winters.

During the winter months, snow accumulation on the roof will be monitored. - So long as snow accumulation remains under the specified amount - operations will continue as normal. - When accumulation exceeds the specified amount, the Civic Centre will be closed. - If / when a closure occurs - Glacier Gymnastics Club will be required to stop operations and classes will be cancelled.

The maximum snow load is approximately 8 inches.
